When we think about the Sahel, we often think about a region in crisis. Alessandra Giannini will provide an alternative perspective on this region. This long-term perspective is shaped by an understanding of climatic and environmental change that has already occurred over the course of the 20th century, and by societal responses to it – including first-hand experience with the practice of seasonal prediction. Drawing on interdisciplinary research on the dynamic interaction of climate and society, local and global, Dr. Giannini will close by sketching pathways towards climate change adaptation and mitigation.
