8th Annual Alliance Graduate Summer School
The Alliance Graduate Summer School is an event organized by the Sustainable Development Doctoral Society of Columbia University.
The Alliance Graduate Summer School began as a student-led initiative in 2012 in an effort to promote interdisciplinary exchange between graduate students researching the nexus of science and policy at Alliance institutions. The Summer School brings together world-class professors, industry experts and graduate students for an exchange of ideas, intellectual discourse, and joint-learning opportunities through a mixture of guest speakers and workshops.
The 2019 summer school will take place from 27 to 31 May 2019 in Paris, France.
The focus of the 2019 edition will be quantitative research methods for sustainable development and their applications in public policy, social science and natural science. The list of methods covered is forthcoming but may include machine learning, network analysis, text analysis, Bayesian statistics and spatial statistics.
Before the summer school, students will form small groups based on shared interests. The groups will work together during the summer school to create a research proposal, based on the methods presented. Research proposals will be presented on Friday, following a workshop on presentation skills.
The express goal of the summer school is to foster interdisciplinary and international collaboration on key topics in sustainable development, including health, energy, climate change mitigation, food security, and many others. We encourage graduate students from all relevant disciplines to apply.
