Intern FAQs
Alliance compiles the various offers from the different departments across Columbia University and processes the applications, to send to the appropriate lab/department for final decision and next steps.
Your hosting department/lab is responsible for all logistics and details of hosting the student including but not limited to:
- the visa process
- student onboarding
For the visa: ISSO will be able to assist you in this matter https://isso.columbia.edu/
~ Please note the following process may differ from school to school ~
In order to process your visa and student intern application, you'll be asked to complete and submit the following documents:
- Visiting Student Intake Form: Complete
- Visiting Student Offer Letter: Review, sign, and return.
- Inventions Agreement for Visiting Personnel Using Columbia University Research Facilities: Please note that you must obtain your home institution's “Authorized Representative” signature and details.
- Current CV
- Official Transcripts or Proof of Enrollment: The document must be in English (or translated). Proof of enrollment can be a letter from an academic adviser, the Registrar’s Office, or other official from the student’s home university attesting to student status.
- Copy of passport ID page
Once the school/department receives the above documents, they will initiate Step 1 of the visa request through our International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) SSP portal. You will then receive an email from the portal with instructions to complete Step 2. After you have completed this step, they will finalize Step 3. At that point, an ISSO officer will process your visa application and contact you directly.
