This Research Speaker Series will feature Xiao Xu, PhD, who is a Herbert and Florence Irving Associate Professor of Reproductive Sciences in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The title of her talk is "Leveraging Hospital Variation to Identify Opportunities for Improving Perinatal Care."
Xiao Xu, PhD, is a health services researcher with expertise in health economics and outcomes research. Her research seeks to promote the delivery of high-quality and high-value care by studying factors that influence access, utilization, outcomes, and costs of care, with a particular focus on women’s healthcare. She has led multiple studies on hospital variation in obstetric practice, comparative and cost effectiveness of perinatal and gynecologic interventions, and prevention and early diagnosis of gynecologic cancers. These studies use both real-world data (administrative databases, birth/fetal certificate data) and modeling/simulation techniques, and apply both quantitative and qualitative methods. The findings help inform efforts to improve the safety, quality, and value of care for women.
Dr. Xu's presentation will introduce the concept of positive deviance and discuss its application to perinatal research. By presenting research findings on hospital-level variation in the practice, cost and outcomes of maternal and newborn care, the presentation hopes to inform discussion on opportunities to improve perinatal care.
This virtual event is free and open to the public.
