The United States and Europe are awakening to a new awareness of inequalities, social exclusion, and discrimination. In this worrying context, can Europe be the engine of social justice?
In a pre-recorded interview, Thierry Grillet and Pierre-André Chiappori, professor of economics at Columbia University, will discuss current social and political trends in Europe. Is the European Union well placed to meet these challenges?

Pierre-André Chiappori, E. Rowan and Barbara Steinschneider Professor of Economics at Columbia University, first taught in France (CNRS, Ecole Polytechnique) and in the Department of Economics at the University of Chicago. He is a member of the Econometric Society, the European Economic Association, the Society of Labor Economists and the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory, and an elected member of the Institut de France (Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques ) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Thierry Grillet is a former student of the École normale supérieure. He taught general culture for ten years at the Institut d'Études Politiques in Paris. Journalist for Le Monde , Liberation and Le Nouvel Observateur , he contributes to numerous reviews ( Medium , AOC , etc.). He edited the Éditions du Georges Pompidou. Former director of cultural development and of the BnF museum, he has published numerous books including: Dictionary of Cinema Thought (Presses Universitaires de France) and Essais sur la culture (Les 300, Éditions First). Last published work: James Tissot (Place des Victoires editions).
About the series
From October 6, 2020 to March 9, 2021, the series “Debating the Future of Europe” will present 12 virtual programs around six questions that Europe is now facing:
October 6 & 13, 2020: Can Europe promote social justice?
November 10 & 17, 2020: Are Europe and the United States moving apart?
December 6 & 15, 2020: Can the European Union lead the fight against climate change?
January 19 & 26, 2021: Is Europe democratic?
February 2 & 9, 2021: Can we speak of a European identity?
March 2 & 9, 2021: Can Europe be sovereign?
These six questions will be addressed during two programs each: an interview in French followed a week later by a lively discussion in English. The twelve sessions will invite prominent Columbia scholars specializing in European affairs as well as renowned European writers, intellectuals, academics, and journalists.

Ces six questions seront abordées au cours de deux programmes chacune : un entretien en français suivi une semaine plus tard d'une discussion animée en anglais. Les douze séances inviteront d'éminents universitaires de Columbia spécialisés dans les affaires européennes ainsi que des écrivains, intellectuels, universitaires et journalistes européens de renom.
