Drawing upon Kian Tajbakhsh's (Academic Fellow at Columbia University’s Committee on Global Thought and Senior Advisor at Columbia Global Centers) twenty years of experience working with and researching local government in Iran, this conversation explores issues raised in Tajbakhsh's book: how local government operates in towns and cities as a form of electoral authoritarianism, the multifaceted dimensions of local power, and how various ideologically opposed actors shape local government as an integral component of authoritarian state building.
