Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Workshop in Sustainable Development 2016

The IPWSD is a workshop open to students working on or interested in issues relating to sustainable development. It is intended to provide a forum to present and discuss research in an informal setting, as well as to meet and interact with similar researchers from other institutions. In particular, we hope to facilitate a network among students pursuing in-depth research in one or several disciplines, whether quantitative or qualitative in focus, to generate a larger interdisciplinary discussion concerning sustainable development. Workshop attendees can present current research they are working on, serve as discussants, or attend the workshop without presenting or serving as a discussant.

We are eager to announce several speakers from our very own member institutions: 

Thais Nunez Rocha (Paris 1 – Sorbonne)
Thais Nunez-Rocha is a fourth-year PhD student in Environmental Economics at Universite Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne and Paris School of Economics. She holds a B.S. in Economics from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica of Ecuador, as well a Masters in Environmental Economics and Energy from Uni- versite Paris Ouest Nanterre with a specialization in Environment, Development and Territorial Management. Prior to starting her PhD, she gained substantive experience in sustainability, climate change and renewal energies in developing countries, working in different institutions in the Ecuadorian public sector and as consultant for the World Bank. Her professional background and personal experience give her the proficiency Spanish, Portuguese, French and English.

Arnaud Goussebaile (Ecole Polytechnique)
Arnaud Goussebaïle is a Ph.D. candidate in natural disaster economics at Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. His thesis deals with risk preventive behaviors in urban areas as well as risk diversification issues for insurers. Arnaud holds a M.S. in physics from the Ecole Normale Supérieure where he completed academic work on weather and climate sciences. During his Ph.D., Arnaud visited Berkeley and Columbia universities.

Stefanija Veljanoska (Paris School of Economics - Paris 1 – Sorbonne)
Stefanija Veljanoska is a fourth-year PhD student at the Paris School of Economics and at the University Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne. At the same time she is teaching and research assistant at the University Paris-Sud. Her research interests are development, agricultural and environmental economics. Stefanija is interested in the role of remittances sent by migrants to encourage households to undertake riskier activities such as riskier crop portfolios, crop specialisation and fertilizer use. Another area of interest is the phenomenon of land fragmentation in developing countries and whether it can provide benefits to households that are exposed to weather anomalies. Stefanija holds a B.Sc. in economics and M.Sc. in international and development economics both from the University Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne.

Leonardo Orlando (Sciences Po Paris)
Leonardo Orlando is PhD Candidate in Political Science and International Relations at Sciences Po Paris. His research focuses on conflict, cooperation and environmental peacebuilding in trasboundary waters in East Africa (Lake Victoria) and South America (Uruguay River). He has conducted fieldwork research in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda (funded by Conseil régional d’Île-de-France) and in Argentina and Uruguay (funded by Sorbonne Paris Cité). He has been Doctoral Research Fellow at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina, Junior Research Fellow at The French Institute for Research in Africa and Assistant Professor at Universidad de Ciencias Empresariales y Sociales and at Universidad Argentina de la Empresa. In 2014-2015 he was Visiting Scholar at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and in 2015-2016 he is recipient of an Eiffel Excellence Scholarship granted by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development.
