In addition to required application documents by Alliance, all prospective Visiting Scholars must submit an application form and the supporting materials following instructions on the link below:

The Law School may request any Alliance Ph.D. Mobility program applicants who fail to conform to the deadlines listed on the Columbia Law School website listed above to explain any emergency or unforeseen circumstances that have prevented them from doing so.

2. Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS)
- In addition to the application documents required by Alliance, all prospective students applying to come as International Exchange Scholars to the Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences must apply to Columbia University GSAS. PhD programs offered through GSAS can be found here.
- For Fall and Spring semesters, please follow the instructions for incoming International Exchange Scholars here.
- If you decide to do research during the summer, you will need to apply to the Visiting PhD Scholar program instead.
3. Columbia Business School Visiting Scholar Information Page and Application
- Deadlines:
- February 1st for visitors starting between May 1 and August 31
- May 1st for visitors starting between September 1 and December 31
- September 1st for visitors starting between January 1 and April 30

5. Harriman application information and link (no link, email):
- Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with decisions typically made within two weeks of applying.
- To apply, interested scholars should compile the following items and e-mail them to Katrina Papouskaya at [email protected] no fewer than four months before the anticipated start date:
- Curriculum vitae
- Proof of sponsorship by an Institute faculty member. In order to be considered for Visiting Scholar status, applicants must be recommended by an Institute faculty member, who must be in residence during the Visiting Scholar’s approved period of stay and is responsible for facilitating mutually beneficial interactions between the Visiting Scholar, faculty colleagues, and students. It is the responsibility of the applicant to locate a faculty sponsor.Cover letter, approximately one page in length, stating the purpose of research and desired dates of stay (not to exceed one year) in the United States. The statement of research should clearly indicate how research at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute is critical to the outcome of the applicant’s proposal.
- A proposal that includes a full description of the research project to be pursued at Columbia, including a description of research done to date. Please address, in detail, the specific materials you will want to access at Columbia and/or particular faculty or officers of research you wish to interview or with whom you want to discuss your project because of their expertise on the topic. (Information from such interviews or discussions would be incorporated into the final project and would be distinct from conversations with a faculty sponsor.)
6. Climate School application information and link:
- A Visiting Scholars/Scientists Committee in the Climate School will review and approve applications for submission to the Provost’s Office.

Please note that being awarded an Allaince grant does not automatically mean you'll be accepted by any of these schools as a Visiting Scholar and vice-versa.
