21st Century Diplomacy: Housekeeping, Bridge Building & Apple Pie

Please join us for a discussion with His Excellency Matthew Barzun, United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

President Obama’s last speech at the United Nations General Assembly noted that the world is both more prosperous and less violent than it was at the end of the Cold War, and yet it is more uncertain and filled with strife. He was clear that “the cure for what ails our democracies is greater engagement, not less.”

Ambassador Barzun will reflect on his experiences of how today’s diplomats can help foster connections in a time of increasing public unease on both sides of the Atlantic.

The event is at Buell Hall (Maison Francaise), and will be followed by a reception.

Welcoming remarks: David Madigan, Executive Vice President of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University

Moderator: Adam Tooze, Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of History at Columbia University, Director of the European Institute.

Co-sponsored by the European Institute, Technology, Media, and Communications Specialization at SIPA, and the Alliance Program.
